Pantone colors of the year 2021
PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating
This year Pantone selected two colors for their Color of the Year: PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating.
If you plan on using these two colors in your 2021 collections, you don’t want to find out too late that suppliers won’t be able to meet your fastness or color requirements. natific performed a feasibility study on both colors so you’ll know what to expect before going into production.
When we analyze a color’s feasibility, we provide a report on each colors expected production performance on the most commonly used substrates as well as dyestuff recipe recommendations. The natific technical team also develops optimized spectral curves (nOSC) for materials where the original color standard is not technically feasible.
Suppliers benefit from having information about potential color or fasness difficulties and receiving recommendations about which dyes or dyestuff combinations they could use.
Let’s take a look at the natific Voodoo™ report and natific’s recommendations.
PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating
Both color standards show low color inconstancy and as a result flare slightly under light sources other than daylight.
PANTONE 13-0647 requires the use of lemon yellow dyestuffs as the main element of the dyestuff formulation. Existing lemon yellow dyestuffs flare very similarly when changing from daylight to store light. To avoid metamerism, it is essential to choose the required shading elements carefully. These golden yellow, orange, turquoise, blue or violet shading elements show a high impact onthe perceived color inconstancy and might lead to metameric behavior.
PANTONE 17-5104 is a slightly greenish-blue light gray. To achieve good results in production, it is essential to select dyestuffs with high lightfastness and good dyeing behavior. A sufficient number of dyestuff combinations are available to match this color. Some standard dyestuff formulations might require an additional element to achieve a metamerism free match.
Based on our feasibility assessment, both colors do not require any optimization and are both recommended by natific to be used “as is.”
