– I actually don’t look like this... I am way more beautiful, but your eyes can only see how I look derived from three color cones. You humans are borne with a genetically lousy color vision.

Let’s start from the beginning.

The human eyes contain millions of light sensitive cells, called rods and cones. Rods enable us to see light and motion. Cones enable us to see colors.

Dogs have two types of color-receptive cones, green and blue. This enables dogs to see blue, green, and a little bit of yellow.

Humans have three types of color-receptive cones, green, blue and red. The additional red cone enables you to see not only red, but all the colors that derived from red, like orange and yellow.

Butterflies have five types of color-receptive cones. So in addition to seeing two colors we don’t have names for, butterflies can see a massive spectrum of colors that a human brain aren’t even capable of processing.

When it comes to color vision, butterflies are almost at the top of the food chain.

There is ONE other animal that has better vision than the butterfly.

The Mantis Shrimp. That’s me.

The Mantis Shrimp has not two, not three, not five, but sixteen color-receptive cones.

I can see both circular and linear polarized light and hyperspectral color.

On top of this… all humans (and well yes, even Mantis Shrimps) see the world different depending on our individuality, the surrounding colors and the light. There is even a high variation among colorists with "normal color vision", such as through yellowing of the lenses or through difference in the macular pigment. This makes it too unreliable. That’s where color tools like spectrophotometers and digital color communication come in.

I have to admit, this is something that humans are good at. Building computer programs that can handle this.

It will give the same “answer” over and over again, no matter of surrounding, the human operator’s genetics or mood of the day, or where in the world the operator is. It lets you, if not see like me, at least quantify what I am seeing.
